Hosted By: UNEP-led   Cool   Coalition,   Global   Covenant   of   Mayors   for   Climate   and
Energy, Rocky Mountain Institute, Clean Cooling Collaborative<br>
        Cities are the places where humanity’s greatest challenges impact the most people.
This is increasingly the case for climate change: the world’s cities are heating up at
twice the global average rate due to urban heat island effect. By 2100, cities across
the world could warm as much as 4.4°C on average. Without intervention, this rising
heat   will   have   catastrophic   impacts   on   the   health,   comfort   and   resilience   of   all
urban communities.<br>
Luckily, cities also where ambitious leaders are stepping up to think creatively on
how they can keep their communities cool. Cities around the world are taking steps
to counter urban heat and its effects, using innovative solutions and approaches to
reduce ambient temperatures and serve cooling needs in sustainable and efficient
ways.<br>
Innovative, locally tailored and community centered approaches are a key part of
this puzzle. Cities need to put in place supportive policy and regulatory environment
to   enable   of   the   right   ecosystem   for   innovation   and   to   scale   up   access   to
sustainable urban cooling practices.<br>
In this session, policy makers and international expert will outline how cities around
the   world   are   leveraging   innovative   approaches   to   deliver   on   urban   cooling,
spanning   from   policy,   technology   and   financial   tools   to   scale   up   access   to

The conference will also closely examine local challenges and priority needs as well as cross-sectoral pathways to raising climate ambition and delivering action. This year’s conference will feature a much stronger focus on regional voices.
This event comes at a crucial time ahead of COP26 in Glasgow, and will provide an opportunity for you to highlight work underway locally, showcasing the importance of urban action in meeting national and international climate commitments, focusing on how science and innovation partnerships are driving inclusive, resilient, and climate-neutral cities.
The I4C Conference’s Global Plenary Sessions have been programmed to ensure outreach to at least 3 world time zones. They are set up to frame and underline the conference aims:
building on climate change science to allow for knowledge gathering and bridging science, innovation and implementation for urban climate action
demonstrate the importance of having the voices of all relevant actors in this field to drive the right dialogue, as well as have a good balance in regions, gender, generation, representation, etc.
address the fundamental questions that lie at the core of many thematic or cross-cutting challenges.<br>

A good reference document to look at before the session is the outcome of the 2018 Edmonton conference on Cities and Climate Change Science: the Global Research and Action Agenda, This has been used to form the thematic framework for this conference. You can find the text on informality mainly on pages 11-12. We have expanded the focus at Innovate4Cities to recognise the growing popularity and application of wider concepts of the just transition and climate justice, that, while related, go beyond purely the topic of informality and informal settlements, and to incorporate more inputs on practice and innovation, as well as research. However, the three research gaps identified in the GRAA are copied below as we would appreciate your reflections in the plenary on the

Research is needed to understand the extent and nature of the challenges posed by, and to provide evidence for policy interventions on informality that simultaneously respond to climate change and vice versa.
Further research could investigate the relationship between climate change and the informal
economy to understand how to increase adaptive capacity of informal sectors and how to scale-up low-carbon and climate resilient solutions from and for the informal sector.<br><br>

       How cities are using e.g. ‘Culture, History, heritage’, ‘Youth Voices’,  or ‘Digitalisation’ approaches as entries into the intricately linked societal challenges and thereby help build critical mass, wider awareness, and tap into root causes.<br>
Embedded in cities’ institutions, norms and residents’ memories are rich veins of historical, cultural, and spiritual information on how cities have responded to past stresses and crises. These stories and narratives have been studied by many academic fields and remain within the oral histories of cities.  <br>
The objective of this plenary will be to review what are these untapped knowledge sources, what are best vehicles for bringing them out while preventing a loss knowledge, and how to utilize these knowledges and unlock their potential to promote transformation change?<br>

       These are unprecedented times where cities are the epicenter of compounding opportunities and challenges. To help cities be better equipped it is critical to mobilize urban climate finance, improve data and improve cities’ balance sheets and transparency. <br>
This event will bring together panelists from champion organizations to discuss the latest concepts and solutions on how to mobilize urban climate finance at scale. It will present key messages on the enabling conditions for urban climate finance bringing attention to the importance of aligning country, city and climate-specific enabling environments and discuss examples and resources available.<br>
