UrbanHeatATL aims to map Atlanta’s most extreme temperatures using smartphone sensors operated by community scientists. A multi-disciplinary team of scientists from Georgia Tech, Spelman College, and the West Atlanta Watershed Alliance - a local environmental justice-focused NGO - are working with the City of Atlanta to design and execute the project to serve Atlanta’s most heat-vulnerable residents. One of the strongest assets of the project is the engagement of community members and leaders who reside in historically underserved neighborhoods in West Atlanta. Cities around the world can replicate this bottom-up/community approach with the potential of creating a large dissemination to stress to city officials the importance of addressing heat-related adaptation capabilities on local communities.
