Over 76% EU’s population currently live in cities. Cities in countries that are less used to dealing with extreme heat are especially vulnerable. The 2003 heatwave in Europe led to 70,000 deaths. In the last few years, many media and local climate experts have highlighted how extreme heat can have adverse effects on urban life in Europe including pressure on energy, transport, health and cause an economic drain. Rethinking how cities function under heat might pave the way to resilience, as many urban areas on the continent prepare for their hotter future.The group will discuss findings and research from European cities on the need for physical, Social and collaborative approaches and responses to address urban heat risk in Europe.
