Achieving the SDGs and responding to climate change are two sides of the same coin. This session will focus on how UN-Habitat’s SDG Project Assessment Tool (SDG Tool) can help cities incorporate climate adaptation strategies into urban planning and design projects while increasing the project’s SDG alignment. Moreover, the session will discuss how the SDG Tool and sessions can help local and national governments to initiate and accelerate action on climate change through participatory and inclusive approaches and help reduce risk and vulnerability in cities.
The SDG Tool, an offline, digital instrument, was developed for the UK Global Future Cities Programme. This programme carries out technical assistance for urban projects to encourage sustainable development and increase prosperity around three thematic pillars: urban planning, transport, and resilience. There are 30 projects across 19 cities in 10 countries (Brazil, Indonesia, Nigeria, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, South-Africa, Thailand, Turkey, and Vietnam). The experiences from applying the SDG Tool in the delivery of this global and multi-stakeholder programme (City Authorities, Delivery Partners, UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, UN-Habitat) can be of interest and relevance to a wide range of urban actors and stakeholders that are seeking new and innovative approaches in implementing the SDGs while addressing climate change. The participants of the session will get an overview of the SDG Tool, be part of an interactive simulation of an SDG session using a case study and hear first-hand experience from the city of Bangkok in utilising the Tool for a flood management project.
