Bio

Rafael Schmitt is a Senior Scientist at the Natural Capital Project and the Woods Institute for the Environment at Stanford University. Rafael's research focusses on the role of built and natural infrastructures in the water-energy-food nexus and their impact and dependence on nature and ecosystem services. While Rafael’s research covers local-to-global scales, one of his research priorities is innovating numerical approaches to resolve conflicting development objectives in large transboundary river basins, e.g., the Mekong, Irrawaddy, or Amazon.Previously, Rafael was a Post Doc at UC Berkeley’s College for Environmental Design and l received his Ph.D. in Information Technology from Politecnico di Milano for his dissertation on developing the CASCADE model for network sediment connectivity. He holds a M.Sc. in Environmental Engineering and a B.Sc. in Environmental Science from ETH Zurich. Rafael’s research has been awarded with international acclaim, for example the Young Researcher Award of the International Hydropower Association in 2017 and most recently the Aspen Italia Award 2021.
