Monika Zimmermann
Former Deputy Secretary General of ICLEI - Germany
Bio
Monika Zimmermann works as a freelance expert for urban sustainability, project design and
management, and as trainer, presenter and moderator. International cooperation between
cities, the networking of high-level actors and sustainable urban mobility are among of her core
competencies.
In 2020, Monika worked on several projects on “Collaborative Climate Action”, the politically
intended, well-organised cooperation across different levels of government to achieve defined
climate goals – ideally through joint action. She also researched on multi-level climate
cooperation in Germany.
Monika Zimmermann held the office of Deputy Secretary General of ICLEI – Local Governments
of Sustainability and acted as Deputy Executive Director of the ICLEI World Secretariat, Bonn
(2013-2018).
At ICLEI, Monika was crucial for building up ICLEI’s work on urban sustainability, sustainability
management, low-carbon development, EcoMobility, Resilient Cities, Smart Cities, biodiversity.
She was also responsible for ICLEI’s global events and knowledge management, urban research
and strategy development.
Monika holds a Master degree in political & administrative sciences of the FU Berlin and has
studied journalism. She is author of numerous books, articles, training materials and blogs.
