Bio

DR EVANCE EVAN MWATHUNGA is a Senior Lecturer in Human Geography and Planning in the Department of Geography and Earth Sciences at the University of Malawi. He holds a PhD in Geography and Environmental Studies from Stellenbosch University (South Africa); a Master of Science in Urban and Regional Planning (Sustainable Settlement Planning) from Heriot-Watt University (UK), and a Bachelor’s degree in Geography from the University of Malawi. He has over 15 years of teaching and research experience in economic and development geography, transport and tourism geography, urban and regional planning and environmental geographies. He has researched and published on a wide range of areas of geographical inquiry namely: master planning and large scale urban development in African cities; informality and urban livelihoods; small towns and regional economic development; energy justice; and climate change and water governance. Currently, he is researching on three international research projects namely: Master planning and Making Africa Urban involving Malawi, Tanzania, Ghana (funded by European Research Council, 2019 – 2024); urban sustainability in post-industrial cities of the global South (Funded by Royal Academy of Engineering, UK); and Covid-19 and rural urban linkages (NRF Covid-19 Rapid Grant, RSA). Dr Evance Evan Mwathunga has also worked as co-investigator on other international research projects including: rural groundwater supply and poverty in Uganda, Ethiopia and Malawi (funded by NERC, ESRC and DFID, 2015 – 2019); social cash transfer and rural youth poverty trajectories in Malawi and Lesotho (funded by ESRC/DFID, 2015 – 2019) and capacity building in hydro geophysics in Malawi (funded by USA’s Geoscientists Without Borders, 2017 -2019).Dr Evance Evan Mwathunga is a visiting Lecturer in Planning at the School of Architecture and Planning at Witwatersrand University (RSA). He is also a member of the Board of Directors of the Malawi National Planning Commission and Chairperson of the Policy and Programmes Committee of the Commission. He is also a member of the Steering Committee of the International Geographical Union (IGU) Commission on Global Understanding. Dr Mwathunga has attended and presented papers at world class universities and international conferences and chaired development planning sessions. He has also received specialised training on master planning and development for Malawi focusing on city and development planning, tourism planning, land use planning, and heritage planning among others. He served as Head of Geography and Earth Sciences Department at the University of Malawi; member of the University of Malawi’s PPP and Master Planning Committees; Chairperson for CCODE Board of Directors, and member of the Malawi Housing Corporation Board of Directors where he chaired the Board’s Technical Committee.
