Dr. (Mrs.) Bakul Rao is a Professor at the Centre for Technology Alternatives for Rural Areas, IIT Bombay since 2009. Dr. Rao has a total of more than 31 years’ experience in field of environment and rural development which ranges from matrix characterization, technology development for waste water treatment and soil remediation, modeling using QSARs, rural services design, impact assessments, monitoring and evaluation of programs, CSR etc. She holds a PhD from IIT Bombay in the field of Environmental Science & Engineering and has done her Management Program for Women Entrepreneurs from IIM Bangalore and has been awarded the “Best Business Plan Award”.
She has been an “Environmental Consultant” with various multilateral agencies like the World Bank, ADB, INEP, GTZ and also works with different companies which provide total solutions to environmental issues including Environmental Compliance / Permitting, Corporate Sustainability, Field Assessments and Remediations, ISO 14000, and CDM activities. She has also been a Consultant for Environmental Management and Policy Research Institute, Bangalore; an institute providing the policy research for the Government of Karnataka; and has lead projects on pesticides, biofuel, electronic-waste, environmental assessments for landfills, watersheds and poverty alleviation and ETP troubleshooting. Earlier to EMPRI she worked as a Project Coordinator in Karnataka State Pollution Control Board, Bangalore, Research and Development Division for development of various treatment technologies for coffee pulping waste streams. She has been the editor for the State of Environment Report & Action Plan for Karnataka produced by the Govt. of Karnataka as well as contributed to the Environmental Status Report for Bangalore Metropolitan Region.
Incidentally, Dr. Rao worked for the Regional Sophisticated Instrumentation Centre at IIT-Bombay for 8 years and is an expert in handling a variety of sophisticated instruments including Inductively Coupled Plasma - Atomic Emission Spectroscopy, HPLC, Gas Chromatography, AAS, UV-Vis Spectrophotometer; and FTIR Spectrophotometer.
Dr. Rao is a qualified ‘Lead Auditor for EMS – ISO 14000’ and has been the resident “Waste Expert” with a leading German Certification Body. She has been a resident trainer for the GTZ on Chemicals Management for SMEs Sector.
She has authored 50 research papers and has been a visiting faculty at TISS, Bombay, Bombay University and SNDT Women’s University. Her current research areas have been Sanitation, Regional Planning for Environmental Services, Assessments for Developmental Projects, Decentralized Planning, Environmental Policy, E-Waste Management, Agricultural Systems Dynamics and Development.
