Bio

Kerstin Sommer is lead expert on slum upgrading, informal settlements, land, housing and shelter management. She contributes to poverty and inequality reduction, and inclusion and participation in slum transformation at UN-Habitat Headquarters. She is focal point for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the New Urban Agenda implementation in informal settlements, slums and marginalized. She is managing the Participatory Slum Upgrading Programme in 40 countries and 200 cities for the past 10 years.She has initiated slum upgrading strategies in all regions globally. Her mission currently is to move countries towards scaling slum upgrading, regeneration and affordable housing assisting governments to deliver Sustainable Development Goals in cities in the Decade of Action.Before then she contributed to the work of the Regional Office for Africa and Arab States on housing, slum upgrading, capacity building, governance and participation, municipal finance, participatory budgeting and sustainable villages programme of UN-Habitat. She has been with UN-Habitat for 16 years now. She holds a master-degree in Urban Geography – Spatial Development, Business Administration and Political Science from the University of Trier. She is passionate about making cities homes with equitable opportunities for everyone.
